This Segway Ninebot E22 electric scooter review and buying guide will answer all of your questions with regards to Segway Ninebot’s latest KickScooter.

It offers solid performance, great flexibility and sleek design for a very competitive price. It is a rare occurrence for a low budget scooter to come with such otherwise high-spec features and carefully designed aesthetics.

This is made possible because the Segway Ninebot E22 KickScooter is an electric scooter that comes straight out of the factory in China, without any middlemen involved.

It can hence provide exceptional value for money.

Don’t get confused by Segway Ninebot’s naming system: The name of the E22 is “E22E” in Europe and the UK, “E22D” in Germany and surely has further names in other regions.

Anyway, let’s dive straight into this Segway Ninebot E22 electric scooter review.

Overview – Segway Ninebot E22

The Segway Ninebot E22 is based on the ES2, looking almost identical.

The most notable upgrades compared to older Ninebot models are the large dual-density tires, which replace the much less comfortable solid rubber tires.

This provides a much smoother riding experience.

It retains from the ES models the three riding modes, regenerative braking technology, app-enabled features such as motor lock and cruise control and the upgradable battery.

We highly recommend the battery upgrade for this scooter. It increases the top speed by another 5mph, pushes the range up to 28 miles and improves the scooter’s hill climbing ability.

A unique selling point of this e-scooter is its charging time of only 3,5 hours from empty to full. Competitor products of a similar price range often require 6-12+ hours for that.

Mentioned short charging time and large wheels are what differentiate this electric scooter positively from the Xiaomi Mi M365, another very popular model.

However, performance-wise, it lags behind in top speed and range.

Performance – Segway Ninebot E22

Top Speed

According to the official website, the top speed of the Segway Ninebot E22 is at 12.5 mph.

Ninebot E22 Top Speed

With the additional battery you can push this to 16mph.

We highly recommend the additional battery, partly because 12.5 mph can be too slow at times.

Acceleration/Kick-Off

According to user reviews, the Segway Ninebot E22 has a decent torque, reaching top speed within six seconds.

Ninebot E22 Acceleration

It should be noted that the scooter’s acceleration is significantly better in Sports Mode than in Normal Mode.

Hill Climbing

Segway Ninebot claims that this e-scooter possesses the ability to easily tackle inclines of up to 15% due to its great torque.

Ninebot E22 Hill Climbing Visual

Tests, however, have revealed that the E22 struggles with inclines much more than comparable e-scooters.

If your target area for scooter usage is particularly hilly, we would hence recommend you look at other models, such as the EMOVE Touring 2020.

Should you decide to purchase this scooter, make sure to climb hills always using the “sports” riding mode.

Range

When fully charged, this scooter allows you to travel a maximum distance of up to 13.7 miles.

Standard testing regulations require this spec to be tested with a 75kg rider at 25 degrees Celsius ambient temperature on an even surface.

Any deviation of any of these parameters will result in greater or lower range.

Note that with the optional extra battery, you can stretch the range to a whopping 28 miles.

For peace of mind: Even if you plan to travel further than that distance, or you take off with an almost empty battery, there is no need to worry. The Segway Ninebot E22 has no annoying auto-lock once the battery dies. This means that you can continue riding it like a normal kickscooter, kicking it forward with your foot.

Braking & Safety

The Segway Ninebot E22 provides the comfort of excellent ride safety thanks to its triple braking system.

It is composed of both front and rear electric disk brakes, as well as a rear foot brake.

Pushing down the braking lever on the handlebar while riding at full speed will bring the electric scooter to a halt within a matter of only four seconds.

Ninebot E22 Braking

The breaking distance here is a mere 13 feet.

I personally dislike the fact that there is no mechanical brake, the one we usually find on a bicycle.

Instead, the braking is electronic and you brake through a lever that is very similar to the throttle.

However, this has the advantage that the system can be regenerative, meaning that the kinetic energy generated from braking is directed back to the battery and stored for re-acceleration.

This technology always reminds me of the Black Panther’s shock-absorbing super suit in the Marvel movie from 2018.

If you’re the type for it, you can also use the foot brake by stepping on the rear fender for additional brake power.

This really helps, but to be fair, one rarely does it. You usually maintain your feet at the same spot on the deck.

An additional safety feature are the rear brake lights, which light up whenever you push down the brake lever. You can customize their mode of flashing (e.g. flickering) in the Segway Ninebot smartphone application.

Also, certified E-MARK reflectors make sure you are always seen at nighttime.

Ride Quality – Segway Ninebot E22

One of the greatest differentiators between this model and previous Segway Ninebot electric scooters are the dual density tires.

They provide a much smoother riding experience than standard solid rubber tires, due to an increased tire shock absorption.

Also, these tires are “flat free”, since the dual density filling absorbs any potential damage from overridden nails or shards.

However, as opposed to, for example, the Segway Ninebot ES2 or ES4, this model has no built-in suspension, which is a downer.

Only relying on the tire’s ability to absorb shocks from uneven grounds is too little, in our opinion.

At least, the mud guards covering the wheels reliably protect you from any dirt or water sprinkles.

Another element of riding comfort is the cruise control mode, which gives your wrist a well-deserved break on stretches that do not require variations in speed.

If cruise control is active (through the smartphone application) and you travel at the same speed for over five seconds, the scooter will enter cruise control mode.

A little “beep” sound signals that you entered cruise control mode, after which the electric scooter maintains a constant speed.

Note that the cruise control speed can be max. 9,3 mph. The Ninebot E22’s range of constantly riding in cruise control is hence greater than its range in normal or sports mode.

Design – Segway Ninebot E22

The design of this electric scooter is notably sleek. I am definitely a fan.

Segway Ninebot E22 Design

One major driver of its sleekness is, in my opinion, the beautifully integrated display between the handlebars.

As opposed to the “mounted on top” look other brands incorporate for their display, this gives the whole scooter a well-rounded look.

The color scheme of the Segway Ninebot E22 is by default pretty low profile.

The aviation-level aluminum alloy frame is mostly black and light grey, with a powder coating finish texture. This creates a very modern and minimalist appearance.

With additional scooter stickers you can however give it your personal touch and make sure to stand out from the crowd.

Another feature that Segway Ninebot designed very well are the light reflectors on the handlebar stem, on the rear wheel and on both sides of the deck.

The certified E-MARK reflectors fit very well into the overall design with their slightly oval shape.

What one could consider a possible downside from a design perspective is that the battery placement within the handlebar stem makes it quite thick. However, this frees the deck from the battery and allows it to look super slim, which is amazing!

All in all, a really beautiful and sleek electric scooter!

Portability, Weight & Dimensions

This model is a lightweight, weighing only 29.8 lb.

We at Electric Mobility Guide are fans of Segway Ninebot’s typical one-fold click-in folding system.

Fully fold the E22 for transport, packing or storage within three seconds.

Once folded, you can carry it around easily like this:

Cool, right?

The fact that the battery is located in the handlebar stem comes with one advantage and one disadvantage for portability.

On one side, the thick steering stem is more difficult to grab and carry around, especially when you have small hands.

On the other side, carrying the battery “directly” in your hand allows a much more balanced carrying experience.

Whenever the battery is in the deck, the scooter shakes around more when you carry it.

Feature Deep Dive – Segway Ninebot E22

Battery

The battery comes with a total capacity of 5100 mAh and is built into the handlebar stem.

Ninebot E22 Extra Battery

Brace yourself for a unique selling point of this electric scooter: It charges in only 3,5 hours from empty to full! This is super quick.

It took Segway Ninebot seven years of continuous development to build this battery.

Obviously, it comes with industry standard smart battery management, which protects it against overcurrent, discharging, short circuiting, overheating, etc. Click here to learn more about smart battery management systems.

Another clear advantage of the Segway Ninebot E22 against other electric scooters: It allows for an additional battery pack, which fits nicely around the bottom of the handlebar stem.

This is a great advantage over other scooters, because such a hardware upgrade significantly boosts performance.

Ninebot E22 Additional Battery Pack

When upgraded with the extra battery back, the scooter’s top speed is incremented by 3.5 mph from 12.5 mph to 16 mph.

The maximum range will now be 28 miles instead of 13,7 miles. Huge!

The (very little) downside is that, with the battery being by far the heaviest component, the center of gravity of the scooter is higher. This makes it slightly less stable.

If you have trouble finding it the first time: The power inlet to charge the battery is under a flap at the bottom of the handlebar stem.

Motor

Segway Ninebot E22 Motor in Front Wheel Decomposed

The motor is part of the front wheel.

Sounds weird, but this is the case in almost any electric scooter on the market.

It produces a nominal output of 300W, is quiet and brushless.

Wheels

Segway Ninebot E22 Dual Density Tires

Segway Ninebot’s new wheels, the dual-density tires, have a diameter of 9 inches, which makes them slightly larger than the average electric scooter tires. They have been developed for the past three years.

The dual density technology of these tires has been patented by Segway Ninebot.

Hereby, two rubber materials with different densities and flexibility are layered upon each other.

The inner layer is harder, providing safety and stability. The outer layer, which touches the ground, is softer and more cushioning, absorbing most vibrations.

It is a tubeless technology, which is puncture proof, because any puncture is absorbed by the dual density foam.

Segway Ninebot hence calls their E22 scooters “flat-free”, meaning that the tires will not require any maintenance. Ever.

The dual-density material also has great temperature resistance: It maintains good physical performance even below -40°C.

Cockpit

The cockpit of an electric scooter comprises anything you find between the two handlebars right in front of your nose.

In the E22, a display is seamlessly integrated into the intersection of handlebars and handlebar stem.

Segway Ninebot E22 Display Speedometer

It projects a speedometer, the current cruise mode, a Bluetooth symbol indicating the mobile connection status, and a battery charge indicator.

The power button right below the display is used to turn the electric scooter on and off.

Toggle between the riding modes by pressing this button twice. Turn the lights of the scooter on and off by pressing it three times.

Segway Ninebot E22 Bell

Beside the display will you find the (detachable) bell, which alerts anybody around you to your presence by a “loud and crisp” sound.

On the right side of the cockpit you will find the acceleration lever with a green anti-skid surface for your thumb.

On the left side is the braking lever in red.

Handlebars

According to user reports, the handlebars are ergonomic and grippy.

They are comparatively thick, which makes them really comfy.

You are much less likely to get cramped forearms with thicker handlebar grips.

Note that due to the Segway Ninebot’s E22’s folding mechanism, the handlebar stem is not adjustable in height. We will talk about the folding mechanism a bit later.

Don’t worry, though.

In electric scooters, unless you are very tall or short, the rule “one-size-fits-all” usually applies.

Lights

Segway ninebot e22 lights front

The Segway Ninebot E22 has powerful front and rear LED lights with a power of 2,5 watts.

They can illuminate the path up to 10m before you.

Turn them on by pressing the power button three times in quick succession – but better to do that before the ride. At times, this can be tedious while on the ride.

The E22 also features rear brake lights, which flash once the braking lever is pushed.

In Segway Ninebot’s app you can adjust the flashing mode.

Deck

It does not matter whether you have the feet of a bird or a Yeti, the deck is spacious enough and topped with an anti-skid surface so that anybody will feel comfortable and secure.

Weight Capacity

Are you heavier than 30kg and lighter than 100kg? Congratulations! You are qualified to use the Ninebot Segway E22.

If you are heavier than 100kg but otherwise really convinced by the Segway Ninebot E22 KickScooter, just get it anyway and test whether it supports you.

According to the official website, the aviation-level aluminum alloy frame passes strength tests of up to 700kg and guarantees 10,000km of safe riding.

Otherwise, for particularly heavy riders, we recommend the EMOVE Touring 2020.

Resistance

The E22 was certified IPX4 water resistance. This protects it from splashes and rain.

However, it is not suitable for riding through major puddles according to the official website.

It is not fully waterproof and should under no circumstance be submerged into water.

Segway Ninebot Smartphone App Connectivity

Connect your E22 to the Segway-Ninebot smartphone app.

The app demonstrates sophisticated ride statistics, the battery percentage, remaining range, distance traveled, etc.

Additionally, you can lock the wheels for your electric scooter, activate or deactivate cruise control, and configure the flashing mode of the rear brake light.

In the app, you can also change the speed at which the scooter will enable electric acceleration.

By default, you need to manually kick the scooter forwards and reach 4km/h until the motor jumps in. You usually achieve this by 1-2 kicks.

You can change this threshold to anywhere between 1km/h and 5km/h.

Segway Ninebot E22 Awards

Segway Ninebot won the renown iF Product Design Award in 2018.

Segway Ninebot E22: Review Conclusion

All in all, the Ninebot E22 kickscooter can be labeled an entry-level model, that is best suited for people with little to no experience with electric scooters.
Within that category it is close to perfect, featuring state-of-the-art dual density tires and triple braking technology.
On top of that, it scores well in terms of portability and design. However, people with higher expectations in top speed, acceleration, hill climbing ability and range should look at more sophisticated electric scooters than the Segway Ninebot E22.
